Here we gather books and burn them to cook a meal. Books contain thoughts about something. Shapeless "thoughts" may not bring us any visible benefits. Reading books will not nourish our physical selves. Reading books does not fill the stomach. But if these "thoughts" were gathered and burned, converted into a form of energy – fire – and some form of food made using that thermal energy, would that food include "thoughts" of a sort, resembling a form of nutrient? Can we, in this way, actually take "thoughts" into our bodies?

集められた本を燃やし、食事を作る。本というのは、何かについての考えが書かれているものだ。形がない「考え」は、ぼくたちに目に見える効用をもたらさないかもしれない。ぼくたちは本を読むことでは、身体的な栄養をえることはないだろう。本を読んでも腹の足しにはならない。しかしもしそうした「考え」が集められ、それが燃やされることで「火」というひとつのエネルギーに変換され、それの火力エネルギーを通じてなにかしらの「食べ物」が作られるとしたら、はたしてその「食べ物」にはなにかしらの「考え」が栄養のような形で含まれるのだろうか。ぼくたちは、「考え」をそうしてぼくたちの身体へと実際に取り込むことはできるのだろうか。
